How the Noorani Qaida is organised

The Qaida moves in very small steps, and each lesson depends on the one before it. The first seven lessons, covered on this site, take a learner from recognising letters to reading syllables with short and long vowels:

  1. Single letters: names and correct sounds of the 29 letters.
  2. Joined letters: recognising letters in any position.
  3. Huroof Muqatta'at: reading the disjointed letters by name.
  4. Harakat: short vowels, first by spelling, then directly.
  5. Tanween: double vowels and the hidden "n".
  6. Standing vowels: the long vowel marks, held for two counts.
  7. Madd letters: Alif, Waw and Yaa as long vowels.

Later lessons (the numbering differs slightly between printed editions) cover the leen letters, sukoon (jazm), shaddah, the rules of Noon and Meem Sakinah, and finally reading Quranic words and phrases. We are adding pages for these lessons over the coming weeks.

How to use these lessons

  • Ten to fifteen minutes a day beats a long weekly session.
  • Never skip ahead. If a child is unsure on a lesson, revise it for another week.
  • Test in random order so you know the child recognises letters rather than reciting a memorised page.
  • Let a teacher hear the sounds. Letters such as ح, ع, ص and ق cannot be learned accurately from text alone.

For parents

Not sure your child is ready? Read the best age to start Quran classes and our guide to teaching kids the Quran at home. When your child can read harakat and tanween, they can begin the short surahs in Juz Amma. Prefer Hindi or Urdu? Our Hinglish guide Quran padhna kaise sikhe explains the whole path from Qaida to Tajweed.

Our Noorani Qaida course takes children and adults through every lesson one-to-one, at a time that suits your time zone.
