Noorani Qaida Online Classes

The proven first step to reading the Quran. Learn Arabic letters, sounds and joining with a private teacher who corrects every letter as you go.

What is Noorani Qaida?

Noorani Qaida is a short beginner's book that teaches the Arabic alphabet and the rules of reading in a carefully ordered sequence. Each lesson builds on the one before it, so by the final pages the learner is reading words and short phrases taken directly from the Quran. It is used by Quran teachers around the world because it separates reading into small, manageable steps.

What you will learn, lesson by lesson

  1. Single letters (Huroof Mufradat): the 29 Arabic letters and their correct point of articulation (makhraj).
  2. Joined letters (Huroof Murakkabat): how each letter changes shape at the start, middle and end of a word.
  3. Disjointed letters (Huroof Muqatta'at): the letters that open 29 surahs, read by their names.
  4. Short vowels (Harakat): fatha, kasra and damma, and how they change a letter's sound.
  5. Tanween: the double vowels that add an "n" sound.
  6. Standing vowels and long vowels (Madd letters): alif, waw and ya, and how long to stretch them.
  7. Sukoon and Shaddah: stopping on a letter and doubling a letter.
  8. Practice with Quranic words: reading real words and short ayat with the rules combined.

Who is this course for?

  • Children starting to learn the Quran, usually from about age 4 or 5
  • Adults who never learned to read Arabic, or who want a fresh start
  • Reverts to Islam who want to read the Quran in Arabic
  • Learners who can read a little but make frequent mistakes and want to rebuild the basics properly

How a Noorani Qaida lesson works

Each 30-minute lesson follows a simple rhythm. The teacher first revises the previous lesson, then introduces a small new step, demonstrates the correct sound and asks the learner to repeat it until it is right. The final minutes are spent reading a short practice line and setting a few minutes of daily practice. Because the class is one-to-one, the teacher can slow down on a difficult letter or move ahead quickly when the learner is ready.

How long does it take?

Every learner is different, but with five 30-minute classes a week, many children complete Noorani Qaida in roughly 3 to 6 months, and many adults in 2 to 4 months. Regular practice between lessons makes the biggest difference. After Qaida, learners move on to reading the Quran itself (Nazra) and then Tajweed.

Not sure whether to start with Qaida or go straight to the Quran? Read our guide: Noorani Qaida vs Nazra: where should you start? Families in India who use Yassarnal Quran can continue with it; we compare the two books in Yassarnal Quran or Noorani Qaida.
