Surah Al-Fatiha in Arabic, Transliteration & English

Al-Fatiha ("The Opening") is the first surah of the Quran and is recited in every rak'ah of every prayer. Because of that, reciting it correctly matters more than any other surah.

Why Al-Fatiha is so important

  • It is a pillar of every prayer. The Prophet ﷺ said: "There is no prayer for the one who does not recite the Opening of the Book" (Sahih al-Bukhari 756).
  • The greatest surah. The Prophet ﷺ described Al-Fatiha as the greatest surah in the Quran, the seven oft-repeated verses (Sahih al-Bukhari 4474).
  • A conversation with Allah. Its verses praise Allah, affirm that we worship Him alone, and ask Him for guidance to the straight path.

7 common Al-Fatiha mistakes (and how to fix them)

  1. ٱلْحَمْدُ: the ح is a clear throat sound, not an English "h".
  2. ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ: the ع must be pronounced from the middle of the throat; it is not silent.
  3. إِيَّاكَ: the ي has a shaddah; reading it lightly changes the meaning, so stress it clearly.
  4. ٱلصِّرَٰطَ: ص and ط are heavy letters; do not read them as a light "s" and "t".
  5. ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمَ: ق comes from the back of the tongue, deeper than ك.
  6. ٱلْمَغْضُوبِ: ض is a unique heavy letter, not a "d" or "z".
  7. وَلَا ٱلضَّآلِّينَ: the long vowel before the shaddah is stretched for six counts (madd lazim).

These sounds are very hard to learn from text alone. A teacher can hear and correct them in a few lessons; see our Tajweed course and Tajweed rules for beginners.

Teaching Al-Fatiha to children

  1. Recite it aloud together before every prayer and at bedtime.
  2. Teach one verse a day for a week, always reviewing from the start.
  3. Explain each verse simply: "We are saying thank you to Allah", "We are asking Allah to show us the right way".
  4. Listen to the audio daily and praise effort, not perfection.
  5. Ask a teacher to check pronunciation early, before mistakes become habits.
